Windows XP is still available. That might come as a surprise to some. All
of the retail department stores are selling computers with Windows Vista, as
are the major online stores. But new computers with legal copies of XP home
and XP Pro can still be purchased through the OEM channel.
What is the OEM channel? OEM is the acronym for Original Equipment Manufacturer. That is Microsoft Speak for registered Mom & Pop computer builders like Comp-U-Talk. When you order a custom built computer you can specify whether you want the latest-n-greatest with any flavor of Vista, or if you want the tried-n-true with Windows XP. Why should you care? If you are running a business this decision could be critical. Many of the industry specific accounting packages either dont run, or require an expensive upgrade to run correctly on the new Vista. One Specialty company even went so far as to tell me that they had no intentions of redesigning their software to work with Vista! So what happens if your workstation rolls over, plays dead and needs to be replaced? Im just asking a questionyou can answer it any way you wish. Another reason to care: Vista is beautiful it looks nothing like Windows XP. If you like the familiar or dislike change, then you might consider replacing the aging workstation soon. How soon? Windows XP is suppose to be available through the OEM channel until May 2009. After May, Vista will be the only game in town until the release of Windows 7 which is tentatively scheduled for debut in late 2009 or early 2010. Of course any of these dates can change, but if you are considering replacing a PC in the near future, you might do well to consider replacing it before May 2009. |
