Section 1:  Today's Quote

We don’t always win, but we don’t have to be conquered.  – William Shakespeare

Section 2:  Spring 2002 Class Schedule

We are ready to start spring classes.  New this quarter, is a class for using your burn drive.  Class size is limited and Neal will teach you the difference between CD-R & CD-RW.  Topics covered include how to use the drive to archive data, photos, music and videos.  A special section concerning how to convert your existing music to MP3’s will also be included.

Several have asked for it.  We now provide it:  How to upgrade and repair your personal computer.  This two Saturdays seminar will get out the screw drivers and let you disassemble, reassemble and upgrade a computer.  We will provide a computer for each student to work on.  (Sorry!  You don’t get to keep the computer.)

Do you want to create your own newsletter?  Janet will take you through the design steps to use Microsoft Publisher for layout of a several page, printed newsletter.  If time permits, we will also look at creating a booklet.

Are you functional with Word, but not efficient?  We are seeing lots of folks come through the store that are fighting with Word.  If you would like to stop fighting and start using the program, register for the Use Word Efficiently Class and Janet will teach you to do just that!

How about a web page for your family or business?  If you have always wanted to create a web page, here is your chance.  We will take two Saturdays in April to assemble and post your personal web page.  Bring your photos and graphics on floppy disk, or bring the actual photos and we will scan them here.

Section 3: Someone Sold My E-Mail Address!

By Janet Riley

I’m in a snit, and I don’t mind telling you about it!   Someone sold my e-mail address.  I can tell because I’m getting all sorts of spam in my InBox.  Mostly, the email consists of Multi-Level Marketing Schemes and Debt Reduction Offers but a scantily clad female has taken spamming to a new low.  I just want to tell her:  “Have some babies - grow some cellulite!  You disgust me!”

Maybe someone has sold your e-mail address as well.  Ever wonder how those companies were able to obtain your address?  Here is a list of known ways for spammers to obtain my address and yours:

-You gave permission to share your address with other companies that might have products which might interest you.  In English, the check box  you forgot to take the check mark out of, said:  “Please sell my address!”

-You used your real address on a newsgroup or bulletin board.  E-mail harvesters love to gather addresses from newsgroups.  If you must post an e-mail address in order to participate then use a “junk” address.  You can register for a free junk address at hotmail.com or at yahoo.com.  When the junk account is inundated with garbage, cancel it and reapply for another junk address.  Give your personal e-mail address only to friends, relatives and business associates.

-Your address was included on one of those cute e-mails that has been forwarded twenty times.  You know the ones.  You have to scroll down through 10 screens worth of people names and addresses before you get to the meat of the e-mail.  E-mail harvesters love those letters.  So how do you combat this disease?  With education!

Here are some tips for forwarding and sending e-mail.

-When forwarding e-mail, do the recipient a favor and delete the names and addresses of all of the previous recipients.  Don’t worry about someone not getting paid because the names are missing.  No company in their right mind is going to pay you to forward an e-mail.  But there are companies that will take those names and sell them to the spammers.

-When sending e-mail to several people, use the BCC feature.  BCC stands for Blind Carbon Copy.  Any address placed on the BCC line will be invisible to the recipients or any one they forward to.  There is no rule that says you have to fill in an address on the TO: line.  You can place all of your friends on the BCC line.  If you are using Outlook Express for receiving e-mail, you can turn on the BCC feature by pulling down the View Menu and clicking on All Headers.

If you have found this information useful, PLEASE share it with someone.  If you would like more information and tricks about using your e-mail, including how to block senders, please register for the mastering e-mail class.

That’s it for this quarter folks.  Stay Safe!  Stay Healthy! -Janet

Section 4:  Featured Web Sites

Local Site: www.rustyfrog.com

Spring!  I love this time of year.  Each night I listen to the frogs sing, it reminds me of the variety of frogs offered by www.rustyfrog.com.  The Rusty Frog is just up the road at Winchester Bay.  Terry offers small custom bronze castings for artists, plus a variety of frog figurines and necklaces in resin or bronze.  If you believe bigger is better then you will really like Terry’s chain saw carvings.  He also does awesome work with clay sculptures and ivory carvings.  Visit his web site at www.rustyfrog.com or in person, 800 feet north of Winchester Bay on Highway 101.  We need to give Terry time to create but he would love to show you around the studio between noon and 5 pm, Tuesdays thru Sundays.
